The Latvian Sangha of Shodo Harada Roshi's Disciples

Our teacher – Taigen Shodo Harada Roshi

Shodo Harada Roshi is the abbot of Sogenji Monastery in Okayama City, Japan. He received the Dharma from Yamada Mumon Roshi in the Inzan lineage of the Rinzai Zen tradition. Before becoming abbot of Sogenji, Shodo Harada Roshi practiced for twenty years under Mumon Roshi at Shofukuji Monastery in Kobe. Shodo Harada Roshi’s teachings are addressed to monks and laypeople, women and men, regardless of their nationality or beliefs. Today, our Teacher has several thousand students around the world. Several times a year, he leads retreats in Germany and (before the pandemic) in other European countries, the U.S., and India.  Five times—in 2006, 2008, 2011, 2014, and 2019—Shodo Harada Roshi visited Latvia and led short retreats (minisesshin).

In June 2011 Roshi gave a public lecture at the University of Latvia. In June 2014, a mini-sesshin led by Shodo Harada Roshi was held in Augšlīgatne, attended by 45 practitioners from Latvia, Lithuania, Denmark, Germany, and Japan.
From June 15–22, 2016, the first Baltic osesshin (organized by the Latvian and Lithuanian sanghas) took place at Hokuozan Monastery (Germany), with 68 practitioners from across Europe.
In January 2019, 44 practitioners from Latvia, Lithuania, Ireland, Germany, Russia, and Japan participated in a minisesshin with Shodo Harada Roshi in the Pieriga region.
